Women in military experience comparatively high rate of divorce

Women who are members of the United States military experience a disproportionate rate of divorce in comparison to their civilian counterparts and even in comparison to men in the military. The experience of one woman Sergeant who experienced two divorces exemplifies what many women in the military go through. After trying to navigate the responsibilities and distance of her own military obligations and her husband’s, the woman’s first marriage ended when her husband was deployed to Afghanistan.

The female Sergeant went on to marry a veteran but that marriage ended under the stress of both individuals’ cases of post-traumatic stress disorder. The couple is currently going through the divorce process. The woman’s story shows the additional burdens that married women in the military carry with them including physical and mental injury, debts, and conflicting obligations and long separation from spouses and children in addition to the usual pressures of marriage.

As a result, the marriages of women in the military are more than twice as likely to end in divorce as married men in the military, and military women get divorced at higher rates than their civilian peers. Interestingly, men in the military divorce at a lower rate than their civilian counterparts. In 2010, almost eight percent of women in the military got a divorce in comparison to only three percent of men in the military. To help quantify the percentages, around 220,000 women have served in Iraq and Afghanistan in positions from military police to helicopter pilots.

The reason why military women’s marriages end in divorce more so than their male peers is not entirely clear. One reason may be that while traditional men tend to join the military, women who tend to enter the military may have unconventional viewpoints and are therefore less willing to stay in a bad marriage. Another reason may be the difference in who military service members marry. Around 10 percent of military men marry another military member whereas about half of military women marry a military man.
