School Busses and Car Accidents

When parents send their children off to school on the big yellow bus and we step onto our mass transit option, we put a significant amount of trust in the drivers. There is an expectation that the driver will do everything in their power to keep us safe. While we have these expectations, they are not always met. Two buses collided this week in Florida that sent residents from all generations to the local hospital where they were treated for injuries. The commercial vehicle accident occurred on Thursday morning, Oct. 27, 2011 and involved a school bus and a commuter bus. According to the accident investigators, the commuter bus driver failed to see ...

‘Self-compassion’ may be helpful after divorce

Divorce can be an emotional and painful process, even for months or years after it’s “over.” Researchers say they have found a new tool that may help people with the aftermath of a divorce: self-compassion. But what exactly defines self-compassion? Researchers say it’s a combination of being kind to oneself, recognizing common humanity and letting painful emotions pass, according to a recent article in USA Today. If people can think of their losses as part of their overall life experience and be less judgmental of themselves, it can make a big difference. A Kansas divorce lawyer says that those with more self-compassion are able to more successfully recover from a divorce. ...

Taking a look back – way back – at causes of divorce

Sometimes researchers go back a decade or three to look at divorce rates and to look for trends. An economist at Clemson University was even more ambitious. He took a look back at divorces and marital disruptions between 1860 and 1948. He refers to the dissolution of a marriage as a “marital disruption” because people often did not have the means to officially divorce. In fact, from 1910 to 1930, he says, nearly half of all marital disruptions were never officially recorded in court. The researcher noticed several patterns in the huge span of time. One is age gap. If the groom is substantially older than the bride or vice versa, ...

Multiple Vehicle Accident

Seven vehicles were involved in an accident mid-day Thursday, Oct. 13, 2011. The truck accident began with a large commercial vehicle sitting on the side of the roadway on Interstate 75 running near Bonita Beach, Florida. Details as to why the truck was stopped on the side of the roadway have not been released, but during its rest alongside the roadway a dark colored sports utility vehicle crashed into the back end. The two-car collision quickly turned into a more serious multi-vehicle accident when five other vehicles crashed on the overpass at Bonita Beach Road in a chain reaction to the original crash. One person in the secondary crash was injured and transported ...

Ocala teen drives car through family’s living room

Negligent driving is one of the most common causes of car accidents. Whether a driver is talking on a cell phone, texting or under the influence of drugs or alcohol, serious and even fatal car accidents can occur. In a recent Ocala, Florida, accident, a teen drove his vehicle into a local family’s home. Between 4 and 5 a.m. on Sunday, an Ocala family was jolted awake by a loud crash coming from inside their home. The husband went to see what caused the noise and found a four-door sedan sitting in his living room. According to officials, a 19-year-old man from Ocala was driving the car at the time of the ...

Children and Divorce

On behalf of Howard J. Pfeffer, Esq. Attorney at Law posted in Divorce on Friday, January 13, 2012 Divorce can be especially hard on children when the parents don’t adequately keep children out of the fray. Unfortunately, many parents find themselves battling for the support and affection of their children — even when this is not necessary — and others use children as pawns in a divorce fight. Yuma auto accident attorneys note that this can be very damaging to children in the long term, and it can also harm relations between parents and their children. Divorcing parents need to understand the effects their actions will have on their children, ...

How are the recession and divorce rates related?

It’s easy to assume that tough financial times bring tough martial times. To some extent, that can be true, but it doesn’t always mean a spike in divorce rates. In fact, some couples are more hesitant to get divorced in precarious financial times. Despite the up and down nature of the economy over recent years, the divorce rate has kept pretty steady at around 50 percent over the last five years, according to an article posted to USA Today’s website. One expert says that people have accepted that a bad financial situation is the “new normal.” This has led to some creative living and child custody arrangements. More couples are staying in ...
